South St. Louis County’s Illinois connection was down to one lane each way Sunday morning after several breakaway barges hit the Jefferson Barracks bridge.

With the river up and in flood, the Coast Guard says just over one-hundred barges broke loose from their moorings late Saturday night.

Several barges hit the bridge and sank.

The rest of the barges have been rounded up or marked in place where they sank.

State highway engineers closed the Jefferson Barracks Bridge around two Sunday morning while they checked the span for damage.

The all-clear came a few hours later and by Sunday afternoon, road traffic had resumed in all lanes.

With so many sunken barges in the river, the Coast Guard has closed 15 miles of the Mississippi at St. Louis to barge traffic until further notice.
