HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOX) — The St. Louis County Assessor says preliminary numbers show the tornado that ripped through Hazelwood and Florissant earlier this month did more than $3.5 million in damage.

Assessor Jake Zimmerman says the numbers are preliminary, but they’ve identified about 98 homes which sustained damage, 30 of those homes are uninhabitable.

Zimmerman says most homes will be assessed downward.

“If you have a house that you can’t live in and you have to stay in a hotel, or with family, and you may be never coming back, then you shouldn’t be taxed on a house you can’t live in.”

Even if the damage is minor, Zimmerman says be sure to call the assessor’s office to make sure you’re home is appraised accordingly.
