South of St. Louis, federal investigators are trying to figure why a Union Pacific freight train plowed into a Burlington Northern freight train just north of Chaffee, Missouri early Saturday.

The collision occurred about 2:30 a.m. when a Union Pacific locomotive T-Boned the Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight where the two lines meet under a county road overpass.

Several cars derailed and took down the county route “M” overpass.

Seven people has minor injuries. . .five in two vehicles on the overpass at the time, and the engineer and conductor on the Union Pacific train.

Fuel in the locomotive caught fire but was quickly contained.

The overpass remains closed.

All seven people injured have now been released from hospital.

The Burlington Northern freight train was carrying scrap metal.  The Union Pacific train  was transporting cars and auto parts from Illinois to Texas.
