ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Illinois Rep. John Shimkus, R-Collinsville, says he’ll continue to push for further investigation into the Internal Revenue Service and claims it unfairly targeted conservative groups.

Shimkus called the IRS scandal “embarrassing,” and says it’s about restoring trust.

“That’s really embarrassing for us because we thought we had progressed beyond that,” Shimkus says.

Shimkus adds that he’s had several complaints in his district of people who feel they were unfairly targeted by the IRS. One man, according to Shimkus, wanted to start a nonprofit that would teach classes on the constitution.

Shimkus says he is encouraged that both Republicans and Democrats are outraged, but there’s still a lot that needs to be brought to light.

He says an investigation is necessary to win back the public’s trust.
