HERCULANEUM, Mo. (AP) – Three workers at the Doe Run Co. smelter in eastern Missouri are being treated at hospitals after suffering burns at the plant.

The accident happened about 6:40 a.m. Tuesday in Herculaneum. Names of the workers were not released.

Details about the workers’ injuries or how they were burned were not immediately available. Herculaneum Assistant Fire Chief Chris Baker says one worker was flown to a suburban St. Louis hospital. The other two were taken to a local hospital.

Doe Run is a metals mining company and a leading producer of lead. Concentrates from mining and milling operations are sent to the smelter in Herculaneum, which the company describes as one of the world’s largest primary lead-producing smelters.

A Doe Run spokeswoman says the company is preparing a statement.
