COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – Illinois State Police in Collinsville say the heavy downpour that hit the area Saturday afternoon caused several problems in the Metro-East, including some on eastbound Interstate 55/70 from the Poplar Street Bridge through the I-64 split.

Flash flooding prompted a water rescue for at least one motorist, police say.

Illinois Department of Transportation inspectors were called out to see if any damage was done by debris floating near the site of the new Mississippi River Bridge.

Troopers say all efforts were being made to get traffic flowing smoothly as quick as possible.

They say there was already a backup due to construction, even before the thunderstorm.

In addition to localized flooding, National Weather Service spotters reported quarter-inch diameter hail in places like Eureka, Bridgeton, Granite City, and Wood River.

Flash flood notices were posted for numerous counties on both sides of the river, Saturday afternoon.
