ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – President Barack Obama has signed legislation officially naming the new I-70 bridge over the Mississippi River the “Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.”

The bridge connects St. Louis and the Metro East.

The name is a compromise between Missouri lawmakers, who wanted to honor the late Cardinals’ great Stan Musial, and Illinois lawmakers, who wanted to name the bridge in honor of military veterans.

The legislation was signed by Obama on Friday, just two days after Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed legislation naming the Missouri side of the bridge the “Stan Musial Memorial Bridge.”

The legislation to named the bridge passed the U.S. House June 25 and the U.S. Senate on June 27 before being passed along to the president to be signed.

Sen. Claire McCaskill introduced the bipartisan legislation to name the bridge earlier this year.
