BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP)- Some Metro-East construction workers are being credited with helping foil a Belleville robbery, after a man demanded cash from a liquor store clerk.

The workers heard the store clerk’s shouts after she was grabbed by the 58-year-old Charles James Jr., who investigators say demanded cash from the register.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department says James managed to get away from an undisclosed of money, Thursday, but didn’t get very far after he ran past a nearby construction site.

That’s where the workers sprang into action.

But the time authorities arrived, the Belleville man was lying on the ground, surrounded by the construction crew.

James was being held on $250,000 bail and it wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer. A telephone listing for James was disconnected.
