Those Poor Kids Who Are Riding School Buses For Hours A Day

Years ago when I was in 1st grade my family lived just outside Whitmore Lake in Michigan.  I was the first kid on the bus in the morning and the last one in the afternoon.  That is until the cute little blond moved in about a half mile down the road from our place.  If memory serves me my ride, one way, was about 20 minutes so I spent 40 minutes total each day.

That short ride came to mind the other day when Michael Calhoun was shadowing a bus that was taking students to Mehlville High School.  The earliest passengers got on the bus at 5:30 in the morning.  They arrived at the school at 7.  1 ½ hours in the morning with the same amount of time spent in the afternoon.  3 hours a day.  That isn’t right even if the kids are going to be a better school.

Children should be able to go to schools in their own neighborhoods and not be carted around like a load of freight to be delivered.
