BENTON, Ill. (AP) – An off-duty southern Illinois deputy’s keen eye is being credited for the arrests of two men who are suspected of stealing air-conditioning units from churches.
Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones says one of his deputies saw a pickup truck pulling away from a church Tuesday morning and noticed the site’s air-conditioning units were missing.
Jones says the deputy caught up with the truck and saw what appeared to be two air conditioners in its bed.
Two Mulkeytown men are charged in the thefts, which Jones says have become more common among thieves who can sell them off as scrap metal.
The Rev. Dwight Jones is thankful for the arrest. His Bethel Community Church in Denning is trying to replace its air conditioning units for a second time in a year.
