UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOX) – The burning Bridgeton landfill and the nearby nuclear waste are the topic of a public meeting Thursday night in University City.

State representatives Rory Ellinger and Bill Otto are holding the first public forum on the landfill since its owners announced they will dig a trench to prevent the fire from reaching the radioactive waste nearby.

Otto hopes the trench doesn’t make the public complacent about nuclear waste in their midst.

“This needs to be mitigated. The radioactive waste and the impact here in St. Louis,” says Otto. “That’s a concern to the entire community, not just [Bridgeton].”

The meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the Heman Park Community Center will also feature a top Pattonville fire fighter, environmentalists and neighborhood activists.
