ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) – A Cahokia man has been arrested in connection with a recent string of air conditioner thefts.

It all started with a traffic stop at the South County Mall.

The arresting officer quickly determined that 34-year-old James Brown of Cahokia was wanted on several burglary warrants in Illinois, and his fingerprints matched those on items recovered at previous crime scenes.

St. Louis County police spokesman Randy Vaughn says at least 10 homes in south County were struck, and many more in Illinois.

“We’ve had situations in the past where they’ve literally tried to sell the entire air-conditioner unit, but generally speaking copper is the answer,” says Vaughn.

Vaughn praised the inter-agency cooperation that helped to identify Brown as the suspect.
