EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) – A southwestern Illinois man is accused of hitting a sheriff’s deputy and trying to grab the law enforcer’s gun during a confrontation in Godfrey.

Prosecutors in Madison County on Tuesday charged 24-year-old Jason Alton with aggravated battery and attempting to disarm a peace officer.

The sheriff’s department says that a deputy sent to a Godfrey home Monday to investigate a trespassing complaint reported confronted Jason Alton.

Authorities say that’s when Alton shoved the deputy and told him to stay away before the two men scuffled. A second deputy later arrived and helped arrest Alton.

Online court records don’t show whether Alton has an attorney. He does not have a listed home telephone number.
