NAPERVILLE, Ill. (IRN) – Calls to the Butterball Turkey Talk hotline are answered right here in Illinois.

The call center is on the fifth floor of an office building in Naperville, where 62 staffers will field 100,000 inquiries from now through Christmas Eve, including 12,000 on Thanksgiving.

Supervisor Mary Clingman tells what it takes to work there. “They have to be able to work on Thanksgiving Day – that’s part of the deal – and they also have to be a kind, patient, caring person, and if you do that and you love to cook, hey, you got it made, and every one of them here has some type of professional foods background – home ec teachers, dietitians, you name it,” said Clingman, who has worked for the hotline for 28 years and has been the supervisor for 13.

The facility features rows of desks for the turkey talkers, and a test kitchen.

They’ve been answering the phone for 33 years, offering advice on defrosting, cooking, preserving a turkey until the guests arrive, making gravy and stuffing, and what to do with leftovers. They stress the safe cooking and storage of the turkey and other components of the Thanksgiving meal.

The Turkey Talk number is 800-288-8372. Hours are 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday, 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, then 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Christmas Eve. You need not have a Butterball turkey to call in with questions.
