MARINE, IL (KMOX)-A 71-year-old man and his dog were killed early Thanksgiving morning, when fire heavily damaged their home near Marine, Illinois.

Marine Fire Protection District Chief Keith Alldredge tells KMOX it appears the man tried to get up to escape, but was overcome by smoke. He was found lying across his bed on the second floor of the two-story house in the 9,000 block of Pin Oak Rd. His dog was found next to him.

Alldredge says the fire apparently started shortly before 1:00 a.m. in the living room, which was beneath the man’s bedroom. He says the damage is so extensive, it may be impossible to determine exactly what caused the fire.

The victim’s name is not being released yet.
