“Frozen” is the best animated movie this holiday season. It is also the only animated movie this holiday movie season. There is a short feature before “Frozen” called “Get A Horse” that is a recreation of very early animated films combined with state-of-the-art 3-D animation as it exists today. I enjoyed that as much as I did “Frozen.”

“Frozen” is the first widescreen fairy tale of its type from Disney since “Sleeping Beauty” in 1959. It features a terrific vocal cast that includes Idina Menzel and Kirstin Bell. In fact, the voices of the characters are a laudable strong point. The film has a nice storytelling narrative texture that will appeal to kids. Simply stated, it’s about the young Queen’s problem with a magic power she possesses that puts a real chill on her kingdom. Yes, “Frozen” does have a little global warning message. It also has the mandatory bad guys and another message about women being unable to trust men. One of the movie’s directors, Jennifer Lee, is the first female director of an in-house Disney animated feature.

“Frozen’s” story and  style is reminiscent of old Disney animation. It even has musical numbers, which probably means we can look for “Frozen” the musical in the future on Broadway. The movie’s big musical number is a Broadway-sounding song called “First Time In Forever.”

Great comic relief comes from a character of a buck-toothed snowman named Olaf.

“Frozen” is a full-fledged Disney animated success. It has great appeal for all ages. While not exactly a classic, it is exactly what families will enjoy, especially at this time of the year.
