The current remake of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” stars Ben Stiller, who also directs the film. It is very loosely based on the first movie of the same title starring Danny Kaye from 1947, but aside from overall story structure, the similarities are faint.

Stiller plays Walter Mitty, a photo lab employee of Life Magazine. The time is 1972, the year Life ceased its weekly issues. He’s a guy with a very simple and ordered life. He’s trying to join E Harmony so he can connect with a girl in his office, played by Kristin Wiig.

Walter has the quaint habit of “zoning out” and imagining he has set off on some daring, heroic adventure. When a negative from a fortune-seeker photographer, played Sean Penn, is set to be Life’s final weekly cover, it becomes a turning point in Walter’s life.

The negative gets lost before it can be published. Walter decides to send caution to the wind and start a kind of world tour to find the photographer and get a copy of the negative so Life’s final issue will have the cover photo that was planned.

The most surprising thing I learned from Walter’s sudden travels is that there actually is an airline named Air Greenland. This new version of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is promoted to be an inspirational tale, but it is so improbable that just doesn’t work. The movie is watchable and mildly engaging, but it is far from the fanciful comedy of the original. Shirley MacLaine plays Walter’s overly protective mother. Commercial placements are frequent and obvious throughout the motion picture.

Even one for Air Greenland.
