“Lafayette Square and Soulard have seen a rebirth over the last decade or so."By Michael Calhoun

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Fields Foods will officially open Saturday in a part of St. Louis City that’s been hungry for more shopping options.

“Lafayette Square and Soulard have seen a rebirth over the last decade or so,” developer Chris Goodson says. “The risk takers, twenty somethings, young professionals have moved in and the ‘mom and pop’ boutique shops are there too.”

That’s why he says this grocery store will be more than just a place for you to get food.

“We have little glass holders on the carts so if you get a craft beer or sample of wine you can shop while you have that,” Goodson said, adding that shoppers can even hand their list to a clerk, who will collect the items for them while they enjoy a drink.

He compares the shopping selection to that a Whole Foods Market. The different departments are designed to look like Main Street markets. Neighbors on Facebook express excitement about having an upscale grocery store within walking distance.

Goodson said designers considered the fact that many shoppers in those urban neighborhoods would be walking to the store.

Fields Foods partners with local farmers to deliver a self-described “inspirational shopping experience.” The grocery will be at 1500 Lafayette Avenue, centered between the Soulard, Lafayette Square and Benton Park neighborhoods.

It will be open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Call (341) 241-FARM or visit their website for more information.
