ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The right lane on southbound Interstate 55 at Bayless Ave. is still closed after a tanker truck carrying gasoline collided with a MoDOT snow plow around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The collision caused about 1,900 gallon of gasoline to leak on to the interstate. Fire officials say they had to use foam to suppress the vapors and mitigate the fuel from leaking into a nearby culvert.

MoDOT estimates the right lane will reopen late Tuesday afternoon.

The roads around the St. Louis region were snow covered and very slippery during the Tuesday morning commute. About two inches of snow fell across the area overnight.

Becky Allmeroth with the Missouri Department of Transportation said the “timing of the storm could not have been worse.”

Like the winter storm earlier this month Allmeroth said traditional ice-melting chemicals are ineffective due to the dropping temperatures.
