High winds and dry fields near Carlinville Illinois created near zero visibility

CARLINVILLE, IL. (KMOX) – An Illinois State Trooper was injured when his patrol car was rear ended in a dust storm West of Carlinville Friday afternoon.

State Police say high winds and dry fields along Illinois Route 108 in Macoupin County created the dust storm with near zero visibility.

The trooper, from District 18 in Litchfield, drove into the dust storm to help a woman motorist who had driven into a field. When he reduced his speed, his patrol car was rear ended.

The trooper was taken to a hospital in Staunton with non-life threatening injuries.

Route 108 was closed until the winds died down.
