ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – An Arkansas woman with the flu died at a local hospital just three weeks after losing her baby.

The 29-year-old woman died at Barnes Jewish Hospital from the H1N1 flu virus after she had a miscarriage. Her family says their doctor in Arkansas told her to wait until after her first trimester to get the flu shot but Dr. Roseanna Gray Swain, an OB/GYN at Barnes Jewish Hospital, says don’t wait.

“A pregnant woman who gets infected with the flu is five times more likely to end up with severe complications such as being admitted to the ICU, having to be put on a breathing machine and other complications,” says Swain.

Swain adds that pregnant women can and should get the flu vaccine at anytime during their pregnancy during the flu season.
