ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – They asked, and they received.

The Red Cross of St. Louis today accepted a $10,000 check from Missouri state treasurer Clint Zweifel.

Zweifel says it’s because Red Cross officials logged onto his website and learned they had $10,000 in unclaimed property.

“More than 50 percent of unclaimed property now could be claimed online with a single piece of paper, without any red tape or bureaucracy,” he says.

Zweifel recently expanded the program to allow Missourians to donate all or part of their unclaimed property directly to charity.

“This really was a product of us listening to Missourians,” he says. “Missourians had often asked, ‘I have a small amount of unclaimed property, isn’t there someone who can use it more than I can?'”

He’s encouraging everyone to check his website to claim some of the $800 million in unclaimed property he’s currently sitting on.

CPR classes and all the other services offered by the Red Cross will get a big boost from the money.
