Because of the three novels by Veronica Roth and a masterful pre-release marketing campaign, the new film “Divergent” opened very well with a total of $56 million on 3,936 screens, which put it on top of the box office.

Kermit and the gang returned to big screens this weekend in “The Muppets Most Wanted,” co-starring Tina Fey and a host of big names in small roles. It came in second with $16.5 million.

“Mr. Peabody and Sherman” charmed both young and old audiences alike taking in $11.7 million, putting it in third place this weekend. For three weeks, this much-loved animated feature has a total of $81 million. In fourth place was “300: Rise of an Empire” with $8.7 million. In fifth place was “Need For Speed” with $7.8 million. “Need for Speed” is not performing as well as expected at the box office. For more on the weekend box office totals, click on the link below.

The big opening next weekend is the somewhat controversial film “Noah” headlining Russell Crowe.
