MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (AP) – Cleanup is underway in portions of southern Illinois a day after severe storms that spawned deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma and Arkansas rumbled through the region.

There are no immediate reports of serious injuries related to Sunday’s severe weather in Illinois, which avoided the brunt of the storms that pummeled other states.

Jefferson County authorities say strong winds toppled trees, damaged some homes and destroyed a carport and barn.

In Swansea near St. Louis, lightning sparked an attic fire Sunday that forced the brief evacuation of 90 residents of a retirement home.

The National Weather Service says more storms, including hail and damaging winds, are possible Monday for portions of Illinois.

Electric utility Ameren says fewer than 1,000 homes and businesses it serves were without power as of Monday morning.
