ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a first responder during an active shooter situation?

Once a year, the FBI in St. Louis welcomes a select few civilians to complete a training academy, learning everything from bureau policy to active shooter simulation.

This year, I had a chance to try it out for myself.

The active shooter simulator is run by Tactical Instructor William Edge.

He hands you a gun, and you go after the threat.

Although it’s only a simulation, the gun is realand the pressure is intense.

It all takes place in a small white room, where there’s a projector that displays officers in the school, an office building and an abandoned warehouse.

An example of instructions from the simulator was: “You respond to a report of an active shooter in a local school. You form a rapid response team of other officers and begin searching the building for the suspect.”

Edge tells me the FBI doesn’t fire warning shots.

“You, the agent at this time, you decide what it takes to eliminate that threat, and then you eliminate that threat,” he says.

Edge says that this is the same simulation that real FBI agents use to train, and that it keeps them fresh and active.

The citizens academy teaches about 20 people a year including dentists, restaurant owners, university professors and attorneys, to get a better idea of how to act in a crisis.

At this time, participants are nominated for the program by the FBI.
