BONNE TERRE, Mo. (KMOX) – Condemned killer Russell Bucklew could still be executed today, even though U.S. Supreme Court justice Samuel Alito stopped the execution last night without explanation.

Attorney General Chris Koster said this doesn’t mean Bucklew wont be executed, it just means the Supreme Court will take up the case later today.

Missouri still legally has the entire day to put Bucklew to death, and prison officials remind us that two other cases were once put on hold.

Department of Corrections Spokesman Mike O’Connell says Bucklew’s rare medical condition will not change any of Missouri’s execution procedures.

“Missouri isn’t Oklahoma,” he says. “Missouri uses a different drug, a different sequence, a different execution protocol, and different personnel.”

O’Connell says executions will continue to be carried out just like the six before Bucklew.

“In all of those executions, the witnesses, including members of the media, said that the offenders took a couple of deep breaths, closed their eyes, and appeared to go to sleep,” he says. “They died peacefully with no signs of any type of disturbance.”

Bucklew’s attorneys say he has a condition that causes weakened and malformed blood vessels and could experience great suffering.

Bucklew was convicted of killing a man who his ex-girlfriend was living with in Southeast Missouri. He then handcuffed, beat and raped his ex-girlfriend and later beat her mother with a hammer.
