Melissa McCarthy is arguably the funniest and most gifted actress/comedienne of her generation. With a background as a stand-up comic and her improvisational experience with The Groundlings in Los Angeles, plus her TV work and training in dramatic acting, Melissa bring a lot of experience and natural ability to anything she does. Her newest film, “Tammy” is a project she and her husband, actor Ben Falcone, put together. He directs the movie and has a small role.

The character of Tammy is a real sad sack. She has a menial job in a fast food place. She drives a beat up car. She eats too much. And her husband has decided he wants to take up with a neighbor, played by Toni Collette.

To escape all the bad vibes, Tammy hits the road with her Grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon, on a trip to see Niagara Fall. Along the way, there are plenty of misadventures, like when Tammy holds up a fast food place, blows up her car, gets put in jail and even, along with Grandma, find a little romance.

McCarthy is a very well-liked actress, as witness a raft of her friends who all have featured roles in the movie, and that includes Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh, Allison Janney and Dan Aykroyd. While there is plenty of McCarthy’s trademark comedy in “Tammy,” this movie also has many plot elements about family, self-image, friends and finding your way in the world. It’s a curious mix for a film like this, which has been promoted as an all-out laugher, which it is not.

But the supporting cast of really fine actors and McCarthy’s ability to do both serious and comedic acting in the same motion picture make “Tammy” a nice night out at the movies. And at times, it is very funny.
