SUNSET HILLS, Mo. (KMOX) – The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen is not moving forward to impeach its mayor yet, but has voted to hire a lawyer to advise members on how to do so.

More than 100 residents attended the meeting for three hours of emotional public testimony – both in support of impeaching Mayor Mark Furrer and to speak out against it.

Doug McGuire and several others told board members they were acting like children and were an embarrassment to the community.

“I’m just here to say, as a disabled Vietnam veteran, I am appalled by what is going on by this board – trying a man before he is tried in a court of law,” he said.

McGuire said he hopes voters “speak loud and clear” about their displeasure with “the inactivity and the grade-school antics” of some board members.

Paul Whitbrode and others disagreed.

“The behavior that the mayor has demonstrated at various times just is so unsuitable. It’s been an embarrassment to the community,” Whitbrode said. “He has to look to other members on the panel to figure out how to vote on issues, he just doesn’t understand city government … ”

Furror is accused of intentionally hitting a bicyclist with his car in July.

He faces assault and property damage charges.

The Board of Aldermen voted 5-3 to hire a lawyer to advise them on how to impeach Furrer.
