ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The streets and sidewalks downtown need a lot of work, and Downtown S.T.L. Inc. is proposing a special taxing district to pay for it. Chief Operating Officer Missy Kelley says business and property owners downtown are in support.
“They understand that what happens in our downtown and the state of our downtown significantly affects our entire region.” Kelly says.
Some of the streetscape improvements would likely come on Tucker Blvd., and maintenance on Washington Ave., plus sidewalks and lighting on Clark Ave., between the Scottrade Center and Busch Stadium, and the streets between Ballpark Village and Washington Ave.
At issue is what the taxes would be, Kelley says they’re zeroing in on a combination of property and sales tax, so one group isn’t bearing all of the burden. More than 50 blocks downtown could get an upgrade to their streetscape.
“The money would be used for transportation related that include walking on the streets but also street cars, bikes and entire region.” Kelly says.
It’s still not decided if the taxing district would involve a sales tax, property tax, or some combination.
