Old and New – At dinner with a couple of members of the R&A I was asked if I had ever played the “New Course” at St. Andrews. I have not. I asked how old the New Course is and they said it opened in 1901. The oldest course in St. Louis, Glen Echo Country Club, opened in the same year as the ‘youngster’ at St. Andrews.
Dominant – How good has Jordan Spieth been in the majors this year? Through the first round of the Open Championship at St. Andrews Spieth has spent exactly two holes for the year where he was over par for the tournament. Spieth was never over par at the Masters. He bogeyed the sixth hole at Chambers Bay in round one to slip to one over. He birdied two holes later, added another immediately and has been under par ever since. Through round one at the Open he has been in red numbers.
Memory Lane – Before teeing off in his last Open Championship Tom Watson was asked about the most special memory in 37 years. Let the Kansas City native and five time champion tell the story.
“Probably the very beginning, that Sunday morning of the playoff against Jack Newton. I was leaving the house, and it’s raining, it’s cold, and here comes a little Scottish girl, comes up to the front door and said, “Mr. Watson, please take this for good luck.”
I could barely understand her, but I finally figured it out. She gave me a little thing of tinfoil, and it was some white Heather, and I kept that in my bag for years for good luck, and it brought me good luck. But I remember that little girl. She was so sweet and innocent, but came over to wish me good luck. That’s what golf is in Scotland, right there. She probably never played the game before, but her mom and dad said, go over and give this to Mr. Watson and wish him good luck.”
