ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Another violent weekend in St. Louis city is once again igniting the hot topic of hiring more police officers.
Alderman Joe Vaccaro wants more police, and says in 2008, St. Louis voters approved Proposition S, a sales tax increase, that’s still being paid today.
The promise was with passage of the tax hike, more St. Louis police officers would be hired, bringing the department’s force to 1,400.
Vaccaro says it never happened, and as it stands now, the department doesn’t even have the 1,250 officers.
Vaccaro is also concerned the Board of Aldermen can’t get a straight answer from the public safety office about where that 2008 tax revenue has gone.
