ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A cab driver known for his political activism in Ferguson is running for Mayor of St. Louis as a republican. Umar Lee says that he wants to end poverty.
“One thing we can do, we’ll cut taxes…we’ll eliminate the payroll tax all together on no-income and middle income people,” says Lee. “We will raise the payroll tax rate for the upper income people in St. Louis. People will no longer get a free load, no more corporate welfare.”
He says that several companies and teams such as: Whole Foods Market, IKEA, Cortex District and the St. Louis Cardinals will not receive corporate welfare. He also says that he is not going to let the St. Louis Rams leave the city without facing a several billion dollar departure tax.
Lee wishes to make St. Louis the “refugee capitol of the nation” and bring many Syrian refugees to the city.
The election is set for April of 2017.
