ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The grueling clean-up process starts once the flood waters recede, and the Red Cross has some safety tips as you return to your home.
Before entering your home, look outside for loose power lines, damaged gas lines or foundation cracks. Parts of your home may have collapsed.

Approach entrances carefully. See if porch roofs and overhangs have all their supports.
Watch out for wild animals, especially poisonous snakes.
If you smell natural or propane gas or hear a hissing noise, leave immediately.
Keep children and pets away from hazardous sites and floodwater.
During clean-up, wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and rubber boots.
Before entering the flood zone, make sure you’ve had a tetanus shot within the last 10 years.
