ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Starting later this summer, expect some of the footage you see on the news to come from drones.
The Federal Aviation Administration approved the commercial use of drones this week, weighing no more than 55-pounds and keeping below 400-feet. Another rule, allows drones to fly at night, but only if they have lights that can be seen from 3 miles away.
Mike Cavender heads up the Radio, Television and Digital News Association he says despite some restrictions, the ability of a journalistic organization to fly an unmanned drone opens up an entirely new aspect of news-gathering.
He anticipates drones will offer incredible new viewing angles from news locations.
FAA rules, while operators won’t need a pilot’s license, they’ll still have to have a basic knowledge of aviation and register their drones.
