ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The next phase of the new Grand bridge project over Interstate 44 happens this weekend, but it will make going to and from downtown significantly harder.
MoDOT Area Engineer Michelle Voegele says Grand Boulevard at at I-44 will close later today, stopping all traffic in both directions. “Crews will close all lanes of I-44 between Jefferson and Vandeventer. We will be demolishing the Grand bridge over 44 this weekend,” she says. Voegele advises to avoid I-44 if at all possible.
But with the Cardinals back in town and the Festival of Nations happening in Tower Grove Park this weekend, the timing of the demolition seems like a literal roadblock to fun. However, Voegele says “There’s never a good weekend in downtown to do road construction,” and suggests some alternate routes around the Grand closure.
“We have worked with the event coordinators, we will have signing off of I-64 at Kingshighway for Festival of Nations as well as Interstate 55 at Arsenal,” Voegele says. She adds Chouteau Avenue or Gravois Road will be good alternatives for drivers who want to avoid the shutdown altogether.
Work on the new Grand bridge over I-44 started in June and will run through the end of the year.
