ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – In what may have been his first public comments since leaving office, former Ferguson police chief Tom Jackson spoke to CNN Friday about a fatal police-involved shooting in Charlotte.

Nightly protests in North Carolina follow the fatal shooting of Keith Scott on Tuesday.

“I am so impressed with how well they have done,” Jackson says. “They’ve been very stern in suppressing the violence, which is what you’ve got to do.”

Jackson was asked if he thought Charlotte police should’ve released video of the shooting before the victim’s family did.

“Where I am in St. Louis County, the prosecuting attorney really owns all that stuff, because he is going to be investigating the shooting,” Jackson says. “It’s a homicide, but he has to determine or not it’s justified or if it’s some sort of crime.”

Jackson said at the same time, law enforcement now understand the importance of getting ahead of social media reactions to police shootings.
