ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – St. Louis-based Luxco is betting on bourbon and breaking ground on a new 70-acre distillery in Bardstown on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
Luxco chairman and CEO Donn Lux says they’ve been in the bourbon business since 1965, but they contracted with Kentucky distilleries to make the spirit for them. They noticed flavored vodka sales going down and bourbon sales going up a few years ago. Lux says because of demand, the distilleries no longer have the capacity to make bourbon for Luxco.
Whiskey takes time to make and isn’t as mechanical of a process to produce. “Every bottle of whiskey has a history and a heritage behind it because it has to come off a still somewhere. It’s just not mass-produced like a vodka or a gin,” he says.
The Pearl Vodka and Everclear manufacturer makes about 20,000 barrels of whiskey a year. Existing brands include Rebel Yell, Ezra Brooks, Blood Oath and David Nicholson 1843. Lux says because of their new facility, they have a half-dozen new brands on the drawing board.
The new distillery, called Lux Row, should be fully operational by 2020.
