WATERLOO, IL (KMOX)-A local sheriff has issued a warning on Facebook, for those who are dressing up like clowns and chasing people.

In his post published Sunday, Monroe County Sheriff Neal Rohlfing offers them some advice.

“For one,” he says, “you can be arrested for doing this and I can assure you if the sheriff’s department has to respond to a call regarding regarding you dressed like a clown chasing people then you will go to jail.”

He also reminds would-be-clowns that Illinois allows residents to carry firearms. “Think for a minute what the outcome could be if you decided to chase some kids dressed as a clown and you are caring a fake weapon. If a parent of these kids has a CCW permit and feels you are an imminent threat to their life then this could end poorly for you.”

Rohlfing closes his post with: “The moral of the story is do not act like a clown or you will go to jail or could be injured yourself.”

He says there have been sightings of clowns chasing people in the county, most recently in the city of Columbia.
