ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – They’re on the road to recovery, thanks to a lot of local generosity.

The Coulter family from California gave up their home to take their two young sons on a once-in-a-lifetime cross-country trip – but last week their van packed with everything they own was stolen and burned here in St. Louis.

Unable to stay in their hotel past the weekend, they received offers of free places to spend the night and then the use of a van to replace the one that was destroyed. Darrell Coulter Jr. says donations keep pouring in to their GoFundMe page.

“Things are looking up for us,” Coulter says. “Just yesterday we actually went out to the Arch and me and my family went around and ventured around downtown. Things are getting a lot better.”

Donations to that account have doubled since word about the Coulter’s plight began circulating.

They hope to continue their cross-country trip with their two young boys within a couple of weeks.
