ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) – Just days after it started as the spark of an idea in the mind of an Affton woman, Clydesdale Park in south St. Louis County is now named in honor of fallen county police officer Blake Snyder.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger made it official during Tuesday night’s county council meeting.

“Now therefore I, Steven B. Stenger county executive of St. Louis County, do declare and order the following,” he said. “The St. Louis County park presently known as Clydesdale Park is hereby renamed and hereafter referred to as the Officer Blake C. Snyder Memorial Park. St. Louis County desires to recognize Officer Snyder’s sacrifice in a way in which all members of our community can share and honor Officer Snyder’s memory.”

Stenger then presented a copy of his executive order to Elizabeth Snyder, Blake Snyder’s widow.

Also on hand for the occasion were two of the women who spearheaded the movement to rename Clydesdale Park in honor of the officer who was fatally shot while answering a call on the morning of Oct. 6 — Kathy Bosch and Dawn Oppy.

Kathy Bosch says she came up with the idea while driving past the park, which is frequently patrolled by county officers, shortly after Officer Snyder was killed.

“And it kind of just hit me, I thought it would be so wonderful if this park was named after him,” she explained prior to the meeting. “That’s when I went on our Affton page and I put it on there and Dawn picked it up and ran with it.”

“I got on it while I was at work on Friday writing up the petition, hoping to get some support over the weekend,” Dawn Oppy recalled. “I thought if we could get a thousand signatures we’d have a pretty good shot of being able to be heard by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.”

Instead, the idea exploded online and as of Tuesday, just a few days later, more than 6,000 signatures had been collected and that caught Stenger’s eye.

He’d been searching for a good way to honor Snyder’s memory when the online petition drive came to his attention.

“It has been a difficult couple of weeks in St. Louis County following the tragic death of Officer Blake Snyder,” according to Stenger. “The fact is that we are all mourning the loss of this outstanding young man who devoted his life to serving others. I want to personally thank on behalf of the county all of the residents who have supported Officer Snyder’s family, whether it was through a prayer, a donation to Backstoppers, leaving a remembrance at a memorial site, or participating in one of the countless fundraisers that have been staged throughout the region.”

The newly renamed Officer Blake C. Snyder Memorial Park is located on Green Park Road, not far from where Officer Snyder was killed.
