SPRINGFIELD, Il. (KMOX) – Democrats this morning are demanding an apology from Illinois Republican Sen. Mark Kirk after comments he made during last night’s debate about challenger Rep. Tammy Duckworth.
Kirk and Duckworth squared-off in a televised debate for U.S. Senate. The Illinois seat could be one that determines control of the chamber.
Duckworth, who lost her legs fighting in the Iraq War, touted her family’s military background saying “My family has served this nation in uniform going back to the Revolution. I am a daughter of the American Revolution, I’ve bled for this nation.”
In response, Kirk said “I forgot your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington.” The comment was met with silence.
Duckworth was born in Thailand to a Thai mother. Her father was a U.S. Marine who traces his family’s military history to the Revolutionary War.
Kirk’s campaign spokesman later released a statement reading: “Sen. Kirk has consistently called Rep. Duckworth a war hero and honors her family’s service to this country. But that’s not what this debate was about.”
