St. Louis is absolutely the place you want to be to celebrate our nation’s independence. Not only are there multiple celebrations in the outlying areas of the St. Louis region, there is the mother of all July 4th celebrations, Fair St. Louis. And unless you’ve experienced all these celebrations has to offer, you haven’t properly celebrated Independence Day.

We St. Louisans celebrate Independence Day with passion and we celebrate it for at least 4 days. Yes, that’s right. The fabulous Fair St. Louis is a 4 day event packed full fun and entertainment. Plan to make a long weekend of it. It will take 4 days to stroll through all the vendor booths and shop all the local artisans there. The Kid’s Activity Zone is chock full of crafts,  street performers, face painters and more. Your kids won’t want to leave. And then there are the concerts. Oh, so many concerts! Superduperkyle, Akon, Sister Hazel, 3 Doors Down, Jake Owen and Dan + Shay just to name a few. Let the party begin.

No proper Independence Day celebration is absent a spectacular parade. In St. Louis, the Fair St. Louis parade, otherwise known as the VP Parade, celebrates its 135th year of pageantry. On July 1st make sure you have your spot on the parade route which begins at Kiener Plaza at 9:30 a.m. This year you can expect more than 17 spectacularly decorated floats, helium filled character balloons and 12 marching bands. You may even get a glimpse of the famous veiled prophet.


This year’s Fair St. Louis celebration is being held in Forest Park. And while you’re enjoying the fair’s concerts, food and vendors, make plans to stay for the real attraction that is an unparalleled fireworks spectacular. Each night of the fair a pyrotechnic extravaganza takes place to mark the end of the day’s events. Along Lagoon Drive is the stage for the show at the Enterprise Rent a Car/Edward Jones fireworks show stage. Be prepared to have your mind blown.

St. Charles Riverfest 2017

A little farther west, another Independence Day celebration takes place in Frontier Park on the St. Charles riverfront. Riverfest 2017 is another of our area’s patriotic July 4th parties. Beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday night, the park will be filled with vendors, food, entertainment and concerts, enough to round our your Independence Day commemorations. The parade is a “don’t miss” event. It begins at 10 a.m. Bales Park and North Main Street. After it’s conclusion at about 12 p.m. you can to back to Frontier park to enjoy concerts and festivities. On the nights of the 3rd and the 4th, of course, there is a huge fireworks extravaganza over the Missouri River for everyone to enjoy.

If, perhaps, you want to extend your celebration a bit, why not start at Patriots in the Park, in Granite City? Their celebration starts evenings from June 29 to July 4. You’ll find lots to do there. Carnival rides, food, all kinds of entertainment and carriage rides are just part of the fun. Fireworks begin at 9:15 on the night of the 4th at Coolidge Middle School Grounds, 3231 Nameoki Road.
