AFFTON, Mo. (KMOX) – St. Louis County Police are looking into the possibility that Sunday morning’s shooting of an armed man in Affton may be a case of what’s called attempted suicide by cop.

“We’ve got to look at a lot of evidence. We’ve got to talk to some family members. We’ve got to search the house for anything maybe related to that. It’s just way too early to make that call, ” said St. Louis County police sergeant Shawn McGuire.

McGuire said someone called from a home on Harlan (near the historic Oakland House), just after daybreak, and asked for help.

When officers got there, they were confronted by a man with a handgun and large sword.

McGuire said one of three responding officers fired the shots that critically-wounded the man. He said it does not appear the man fired at officers.

McGuire said no officers were physically injured, but may be mentally-scarred, “It’s a tragic event. They have to non-stop replay it in their heads and talk to detectives and really focus on what happened. It’s got to be stressful.”

ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX)-An officer-involved shooting in south St. Louis County has left a suspect in critical condition.  No officers were injured.

Police released the following statement:

On October 1, 2017 at approximately 6:37 AM, St. Louis County Police officers from the Affton Southwest Precinct responded to a residence in the 7700 block of Harlan Street for a “call for police.” The caller did not specify any particular need and did  not answer any call backs attempted by dispatchers.

Upon arrival, uniformed officers attempted to make contact with the caller by knocking on the front door of the residence. When they received no answer, they peered through a front window. Officers observed a white male approaching the door as he held a handgun in one hand and a sword in the other. The subject opened the door and released a dog from the residence as officers stepped back. The subject then exited the residence and stepped on the porch, still holding the weapons. The officers gave commands directing him to drop his weapons; however, the suspect did not comply. One police officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect several times.

The suspect, a male in his late 30’s, was transported to a local hospital for life-saving treatment. He remains there in critical condition.

The handgun and sword the suspect was in possession of were recovered.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The officer who discharged his weapon is a male with eight years of service with the St. Louis County Police Department.

The incident is under investigation by the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons.

Additional information will be disseminated as it becomes available.
