ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The tech support scam is the latest thing to watch out for. Better Business Bureau international investigation specialist Steve Baker explains that a pop-up on your computer might claim a problem and give you a toll-free number to call for Microsoft, but it’s a scam and they hack into your computer while taking your money. Most of the scammers are in India, but Baker says not all of them.
“The U.S. Attorneys Office, and over in Fairview Heights they’ve indicted about 18 guys, I think, so far that were working out of a big room in Florida and calling people across the country, using the same sort of popups and stuff,” he says.
A woman in Hazelwood gave them $179 and later a local computer shop told her that nothing was wrong with her computer.
