ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The endowment at the University of Missouri’s flagship campus in Columbia has topped $1 billion for the first time.
Many universities try to match their endowment to their overall budget. For Mizzou, that would be $2.3 billion when you include its hospital. Tom Hiles is vice chancellor of university advancement.

“We have very very generous alumni, very successful alumni, but we started campaigning much later that our peers, Michigan and Ohio State started campaigning in the 60’s and 70’s, and we started our first significant one in 2000,” he says.

When asked if the endowment means the university has put the 2015 protests and lost enrollment behind it, Hiles points out alumni stepped up and gave $171 million in one year and enrollment numbers, he says, are looking better and stable leadership is in place.
