Nothing signifies the change in seasons like a family outing to pick apples. The pools are closed, the air gets a little crisp and fall is just around the corner. September is the perfect month to do it if you live in or around St. Louis. Luckily, there are some wonderful orchards in the area that offer a variety of apples to pick. Additionally, they all feature fun activities for you and the family to partake in while you’re visiting. And of course when you get home, there are endless possibilities for cooking, baking or decorating with all your apples. Here is a list of the top five spots for picking them in and around the St. Louis area.

Located only 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis, Eckert’s Belleville Farm has always been a very popular local destination for apple picking. Eckert’s offers a wide variety of apples including Honey Crisp, Jonagold, Green Delicious and Red Delicious (as well as others later in the season). But Eckert’s doesn’t stop with just its fantastic orchards, it also has plenty of kids’ activities including pony and camel rides as well as mechanical rides and bounce houses. Plus, Eckert’s has a country store and restaurant, an old-fashioned custard shop and a beautiful garden center. Spending a day at Eckert’s in Belleville is a wonderful family tradition and a terrific way to kick off the fall season.

Another fabulous spot for picking apples is at Mills Farm, located in the St. Louis Metro East. Mills offers its customers 15 different varieties of apples throughout the fall picking season. In addition to its wonderful orchards, Mills Farm has plenty for the kids to do as well. It provides a play area, animals for petting and feeding and wagon rides. Mills also has weekend festivals with sack races, face painting and other fun activities that guarantee family fun. Located in the charming, historic town of Augusta, Cenntenial Farms and Orchard is another terrific apple-picking destination in the area less than an hour outside St. Louis. Centennial grows over 24 varieties of apples which ripen in succession from August to October. Besides apple picking, the farm also offers its Farm Fun Land on weekends (geared toward kids ages 3-12) which includes a field maze, hayrides, a rope maze and a climbing wall and slide. Plus, the market is always open and stocked with delicious items from Centennial’s farm kitchen such as apple butter, 20 types of preserves and fresh honey from its hives.

Thierbach Orchards, located in Marthasville, is another wonderful, local apple-picking spot. Its most popular varieties are the unique Mutsu and Missouri Red, but Thierbach also grows Jonathans, Delicious and many others from August through October. Right across from its apple orchards is Thierbach Orchards Market which provides family hayrides. The market offers a wide selection of jams, jellies, pickles and salsas. There is plenty of fun for the kids too, as Thierbach has a petting zoo with goats, chickens, a donkey and a pot-bellied pig. Plus, there are bounce house inflatables, mazes and tunnels in the Fields of Amazing Fun area.

Another fantastic place to bring the family for apple picking in September is Braeutigam Orchards, also located in Belleville. Braeutigam grows many popular varieties including Jonagold, Empire, Fuji and Granny Smith as well as others. This orchard is unique in that it really gives your family a true snapshot of what life on a farm is like. It offers a fantastic, interactive, agricultural coastal-themed playground that children love. Plus there are wagon rides for all to enjoy.
