A candidate for assessor in St. Louis County explains why he was late paying his own taxes.

Republican Chip Wood says he was late paying a $2,400  personal property tax bill on his business L.K. Wood Realty — after the business moved from St. Louis county to the city in 2008 and the tax bill got sent to the old address.

“It was nothing that we were dodging or anything like that,” Wood said, “It was the thing had been going out to our main office at Gravois and Sappington.”

Wood says he paid the property tax bill in 2009, but the county sued him anyway, because “the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing.”

Wood says the matter was cleared up before it went to trial.   He provided KMOX with a copy of his March 2011 county property tax receipt showing “no taxes are due.”
