JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich says some state agencies have been lacking in their oversight of federal economic stimulus funds.

An audit released Thursday says the departments overseeing K-12 schools and public colleges and universities either did not appropriately monitor the use of stimulus funds by schools or were slow in doing so.

The auditor’s office compiles a report each year tracking the state’s use of federal money. Missouri spent nearly $15 billion of federal funds in the 2010 fiscal year, including about $2.6 billion of stimulus funds.

The audit also says the social services, health and labor departments need better oversight over programs funded with federal dollars.

Some agencies said in written responses that they disagree with portions of the auditor’s findings.
