Mother of Dead Daughters Fights for New Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) __ The mother of two sisters killed by an Illinois State Police trooper in a freeway crash blamed on his speed and cell phone use wants state lawmakers to ensure such employees can’t get worker’s compensation.

Kimberly Schlau spoke to a state Senate committee Tuesday. She supports a bill that would bar anyone hurt at work from being eligible for worker’s compensation if the injury happened during a forcible felony, an aggravated DUI or a reckless homicide, and if any of those crimes killed or injured another person.

Authorities say Matt Mitchell was traveling 126 mph in southwestern Illinois when his cruiser crossed the median and hit the oncoming car carrying Schlau’s daughters.

Mitchell is appealing the denial of his worker’s compensation claim.
