Ball Bat Beating in Belleville

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A 31-year-old Metro-East woman faces charges that she beat a 9-year-old family member with a plastic baseball bat.

Court documents say Gwendolyn Jefferson of Belleville is charged with aggravated battery of a child under the age of 13.

Sheriff’s Department Capt. Steve Johnson says officers were called to the child’s school on Thursday after “significant” bruising and swelling were discovered on her arms, legs and back.

She was taken to an area hospital, where she was treated and released.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the child told police that Jefferson hit her the night before with a plastic bat and belt.

Officials haven’t said how Jefferson is related to the child.

Jefferson is being held on $20,000 bail. It wasn’t immediately clear whether she has an attorney or not.
